Our song Take This Town took 6th place (Honorable Mention) in the 2009 Indie International Songwriting Contest, in the Rock category.

Several years back, The Spelunkers cut this track for our little music project. I think this was take 2 of 2. John tuned the drums to match the key of the song and played with tympani mallets. Tommy added the guitar solo bit before packing up and later overdubbed the strummy baritone guitar. The song also features strings from Shannon Sullivan and backing vocals from Clay and Diann. Take This Town was always one of my favorites from 'As Tall As The Sky' so we entered it into the contest for fun.

We just found out we took 2nd place in the pop category with "Looks Are For Free." You can check it out on their homepage or on the winners page for their fall/winter 2008 songwriting contest.  

This is a song that Greg Pare and I wrote together as an experiment through email. Greg played a huge role in this particular arrangement. I sent him this little acoustic track with ideas for melody, chord progression, and song title, and a few days later, he sends me back a slew of lyrics and this big idea of a production. The track also features stellar arrangements and performances from Kurt Hoffman on cello and Ken Thornton on the slide guitar solo. Don't tell anyone, but we recorded it in Garageband.

"The influences are both obvious and welcome. "Looks Are For Free" sounds like Rubber Soul era Beatles with a touch of David Bowie. That song is followed by "Another Phase," which blends vintage '80s synth (when did the '80s become vintage?) with the alterna-pop-bounce of XTC. Fans of Tears For Fears' post- "Big Chair" material will enjoy both the lush "Greener Than The Trees" and the fantastically layered "Everything's Perfect."

"There are plenty of more contemporary influences to be found as well. "We Were Not The Same" could pass for a lost Ben Folds Five track, and "Slow Down" would not sound at all out of place on a Chris Cornell album.

Kyle Schiebel over at pantagraph.com has written our first Tales Of A Modern Splash review, and an awesomely good one at that.  He didn't just dip his toes into the water, he dove in head first!

For those of you in the hometown, Kyle is also the featured music writer for TCStyle, an excellent print publication promoting the best in local arts, music, culture, and cuisine.  So... the review will also appear in the May 2008 issue of TCStyle.   

This point in the process is quite an interesting one, where you create your art and send it out into the world, and you hope it takes on a life of it's own.  This is an album we really believe in, so it's great to hear it is connecting to an audience.

For those of you in the hometown of Bloomington, Illinois, tune into The Susan Saunders Show on WBNQ 101.5 on Thursday morning, March 6. 

Ed and I will be doing a live interview between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.  This week Susan is doing a salute to independent artists in the area.  I know our friend Tony is going to be on Wednesday morning talking about Backyard Tire Fire and some other groups he's been recording and producing.

So anyway, tune in, it will be great fun.  I'm guessing we'll talk about the new record, independent music, sample a few cuts, and we may even bring in our guitars to do something live in the studio. 

Speaking of the new record, our pre-release promotion ends on March 10, and we'll be releasing Tales Of A Modern Splash to the public on March 11.  Locally, to start out with, you will be able to buy copies at Monster Pawn (of course) and the very cool and independent Waiting Room Records in uptown Normal.

The record will be released on our own independent record label, Wheelie Pop Records.  We are planning a pre-release early February, with the official release a month or so later.  We are very excited about this piece of work and we can't wait for you to hear it! 

We will have a few ways for you to get your copies early, including a way to get a free CD during the pre-release, so stay tuned for more information on this special pre-release promotion. 

As you know, we recorded and mixed the entire record here at home, in my basement studio.  Many of the songs started as improvisations, and we literally built these melodies, words, and further orchestration on top of these original improvisations.  In typical 100YP fashion, we also invited a bunch of our friends to join in the fun.  Well more on all of this later...

The master from Carl Saff turned out absolutely fantastic.  If you are curious about what mastering is, join the club!  It is a bit of a mystery to most of us, but basically it is the final professional step after mixing all of the songs.  Carl does a much better job explaining all about mastering, right here on his website.  Edwin and I traveled up to Chicago to see (and hear) Carl in action.  He's a great engineer and a great guy, and I've learned quite alot in this process.  For you musicians out there, I highly recommend getting your music professionally mastered, and I highly recommend Carl. 

We are also super-duper happy with the artwork from Ruth Buzzy rocker and artist Phil Schuldt.  So, all we have left is the final manufacturing, a fair amount of rehearsing to play more shows in 2008, and the truly fun part...marketing and promotion...  Hey, if you have any ideas, let us know!!!  We will need your help to get the word out about this record.   Meanwhile, more details coming soon about the release, the music, the musicians...
